How Test Credit Works at MSU

If you’ve taken AP, IB, CLEP, A Levels, or DSST exams, you may be able to earn college credit at MSU.
The tables below show how each exam transfers. Find your exam and score to see what credit you may earn.
A few things to know:
  • To receive credit, official scores must be sent to MSU directly from the testing agency.
  • Credit earned depends on the exam, score, and subject.
  • Some exams give course credit while others may waive a requirement or give general credit.
  • Exams taken before starting at MSU may help you meet university requirements. Exams taken after starting at MSU may still earn credit but may not count toward those same requirements. Learn more about MSU's University Requirements.
  • Some exam combinations may result in different credit awarded. These are identified with the † symbol. See more in the Test Combinations section.
  • General Credit Undergraduate (GCU) means college credit is earned, but not for a specific course. This still counts toward the total credits needed to graduate, but it may not meet a specific course or requirement.

Test Combinations

If you take certain exams together, you may earn a different amount of credit than taking just one exam. Check the chart below to see how these combinations work.

AP English Language & Composition and AP English Literature & Composition

Both exams can earn credit for WRA 101. Because of this, credit will not be received for WRA 101 twice. Instead, you will earn WRA 101 once, plus additional English credits.

AP History and English Test Combinations

If you are not a history major, credit may change when taking an AP history exam along with another exam that grants WRA 101 credit. You can earn WRA 101 credit through AP, CLEP, IB, or other test credit. Transfer courses cannot be used for this combination.
Instead of earning two history courses, one of those courses is changed to an IAH course. This allows you to meet three university requirements:
  1. Integrative Arts & Humanities (IAH below 211)
  2. Integrative Arts & Humanities (IAH 211 and higher)
  3. Tier I Writing
If you are a history major, you will receive credit based on each exam score by itself.
